Is there really help around?

During the last one month, I have come across various activities for kids.
There were contests open to all, including kids!
A few projects on the city by school children.
An inter-school bhajan competition.
A coins, stamps, maps exhibition in the city.
A heritage walk exclusively for kids in a temple area guided by architects, arts persons and many more.

Some curious kids look for such events, through newspapers and web sites.
Some parents and grand parents are interested in getting their wards into such activities.
But what about others?
Do we pass on information to our friends?

I used to share such information through a notice board at the entrance of the staircase in our apartment complex in Mumbai, where we used to live till very recently.
Our friendly Chennai can also come up with such ideas. If you do not live in a big complex or you live in an independant house, how will you share?
Perhaps phone up your friend, email, share it through orkut (!) or have some common place to meet and discuss.

Give me more ideas... I really want to get the kids of Chennai together in all activities.
By this, the idle time after the school homework spent in front of TV, watching all serials with the elders in the family and learning unwanted manners and cultures will be reduced.

What do you say?

Hols are over! What next?

Of course, studies, classes, tuitions! - I hear what you all say in chorus.

School books do provide you with a lot of knowledge. I know you all read a little more onthe subjects from other books, sometimes even books prescribed by other Boards.

A few more read Gokulam, Chandamama, Tinkle and so on.

But, is just reading and saving information on the hard disk of your brain, just enough?
Do you hear from your parents, teachers, uncles and aunties that there are a few skills which need every child's attention?

Do you like to learn to play a musical instrument?
Do you want to tell your friends whats happening in your apartment complex?
Do you like to talk about safety of school children on the road, in your school's morning assembly?
Do you wish to know more about your town or city?
Are you eager to know what kind of work people do in a bank?
Do you know there are innovators from rural areas?

Then, be on your toes to learn some extra skills - communication, writing, public speaking and above all thinking out of the box!
Keep your eyes, ears open but allow your mind to sound you off whenever something worthwhile is happening. Now read about the awards for grassroot innovations.

I will come back with more ideas and resource places to hone your special skills. Keep visiting the blog.

And yeah, all the best for this all new year!

Have fun making your own website!

Hey kids!

Want to make your own website, which really works?

Don't know any basics of web designing? Dont' worry.

It is as simple as a search on the internet. What do you do when you want an info through the internet? You go to www.google.com and start searching... I know!

Now Google lets you design your own website with as many number of pages as possible, but limited to 100mb space. Hey. . . that's a lot!

All that you need is a gmail account, for the time being. (If you don't have one, ask your friend to send an invite to you and open a new gmail account - Gmail is available only on invite, you must be knowing!)
You can even write to me... leave a comment in this blog. I will try to help you!

Go to http://pages.google.com
Login with your gmail id and password. Now you are ready to create your own website.
There are pre defined templates and layouts available - just to make it easy.
You can create a home page and have links to other pages.
You can host your photographs.
You can publish your writings, drawings and all the information you want to share with your friends.

If you are a little more creative, you can do a lot more!
For example - if you live in an apartment complex, you can build a web site for your complex and start sharing the happenings.
Share birthdays. Host photographs of all functions in the apartment like Independence day, Ganesh Puja, Children's day, Sports day, etc.,
And if any aunty or uncle is teaching maths, Hindi or crafts, you can publish the infor on the site so that you all can have fun days together!

Even useful information like last day to apply for a competitive exam, availability of a rare book in the market. . . even the day and time of telecast of Harry Potter movie on Pogo channel!

Sky is the limit!

Go ahead and build your web site, during the holidays, so that you can keep updating after your school reopens.
And don't forget to send me the link. . . I would love to look at it!

Happy New Year!

Hi kids!
Wish you all a very happy Tamil New Year!
Do you know the name of this year? It is 'Viya'. Know more about Tamil Calendar here. Mr Siddharthan from the University of Tennessee has explained the system well!
By the way, is this blog useful? I would like to have some feedback from you.

The amazing number of Summer camps in the city drives me crazy. What to include in this post and what not . . .
I thought it would be nice if I classify the camps according to the area, so that you kids can locate one near your home. But a cute litle friend of mine from Ashok Nagar says that she wants to go for a camp that interests her. . . not just the one nearer to home!

I am thinking of classifying them according to activities. . . like Music, Crafts, Yoga, etc.,

What do you say?

Welcome kids! And moms and dads too!

Here I will try to tell you, what the kids of Chennai can go out to see, dine, play and participate. And I will try to tell you about the events as soon as I come to know. But, yes, sometimes it may be on that day evening. Please pardon me in those cases.

Also allow me sometime to gather news and places. Till then I might tell you about what you can do online or just read books sitting inside your cosy room!

And love you kids, if you also tell me about what you want me to include here!

Happy outing!
